A Rambling Post:

The entries for the 2012 race keep trickling in as we near the end of February. Some interesting observations so far:

The 60k field of runners will be much larger than last year.

All of the course winners from last year will be returning to run again in 2012.

I have managed to nail down a suitable “rental” agreement between the race and the owner of the pneumatic potato launcher for the next 45 years (odd but that is what he wanted).

I will keep the new shirt color a secret until they come in.

Northern Indiana Mountain Bike Assoc has done some work to the trails adding about .7 miles to the mountain bike trail section

It has been a pretty mild winter so far making trail running for this time of year much more enjoyable than in years past.

People have been contacting me about the race at all hours of the day and night. No worries. I find it amusing so far.

If you guys can fit it into your schedules I strongly suggest getting out to the park for a training run with Bill K. They meet Saturdays at 8 AM in the parking lot by the Nature Center. I will be heading out there myself sometime this coming weekend to run the course with a Garmin so I can put the data on the blog. Although I will not be able to make 8 AM session (sorry Bill) I will fit it in where I don’t have basketball or indoor soccer obligations with my kids. If you see me out there please stop me and say hello.

Potato Creek Trail Runs April 28th, 2012

Interesting facts about the race:

The race starts with a Bag Piper playing Amazing Grace.

Possibly the only race course to have a turn of the century cemetery located on the course.

Two seperate out and back loops make the total mileage for the 1/2 marathon course.  

Personalized engraved finisher medals.

Free food at the finish line.

You get to meet local running legend Bill "Idaho" Kulwicki. 

Aid stations 3.5 miles(ish)  apart.

Camp sites are within walking distance of the start/finish area.

You will run around the east end  of the 327 acre Worster Lake.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!   Starting Jan 7th our resident ultra guy "Idaho" Bill will be putting on a group run every Saturday on sections of the race course at Potato Creek.  Anyone interested should meet at the Nature center at 8:00 AM.(EST)  Please wear weather appropriate clothing and carry your own water if needed.   I think these are hour long runs ( tho I am sure you could talk Bill into more if need be ) and this is a great way to jump-start your early season training. 

Also- please check out our Facebook page.  Its up and running; however, it doesnt have a ton of info loaded onto to it yet.   I am hoping to upload photos, course map and other info in the next few days!

Registration is now open for 2012

Registration is now open for the 2012 Potato Creek Trail runs.

Please DO NOT call the park. The office staff is undermanned the way it is, and they do no appreciate all the phone calls regarding the race. If you have questions please email me at pctrailinfo@gmail.com
If You must speak with someone feel free to call me at 574-596-3860. Your calls are not sent to a call center in India, but are answered by me.

Changes for 2012-
There will be no race day registration for the Ultra or Marathon runners. The course will change very little. We will be running the hiking trail loop first this year. It is much wider than the mountain bike trail which will allow for passing and a chance for people to sort out their pace for the first 6.1 miles. The A/S that was on the old section of Orange road will be moved closer to the cemetery. This will provide two advantages over last year. 1) There are vault toilets out on the back of the course that can be used if needed. 2) This A/S will have road access; making it easier to stock and maintain, as well as allowing easy access for support crew and family on the back side of the course.
The course will be marked much heavier than last year. It is my hope that no one will get lost or confused while out on the course.
