Hi guys!   I hope you all have recovered from the run on the 28th.  I am looking at my calander for this coming weekend and it shows a new, local 10k and 50k in Michigan City.  If possible please show up and give support to our local grass roots trail running events.

2012 Overall Results

Thank you to everyone who endured less than perfect conditions for the second annual Potato Creek Trail Runs.  I think 2012 will be remember as the "Sleet" year because as the race got underway the sky's opened up with freezing cold rain and sleet for the first 2 hours.

Guess the Gap Winner:  James Kaminski of Michigan City.  James guessed with in 32 seconds the gap in time from the first half marathon  finisher and the first Ultra finisher.  It was a great guess as James was the second person on the list behind Larry Bigler.  James wins the Nike + tomtom powered GPS trainer.
The numbers:  The Gap in time was 4:51:22.  Jame's guess was 4:50:50.  Nice job!

Hello Runners! This years Potato Creek Trail Runs are bigger and better than ever. The course is listed above at Garmin Connect. This email contains important race info regarding packet pick up, the park location, camping, and race day instructions.

PACKET PICKUP: Packet pickup this year will take place at Metro Run and Walk on Friday 27th from 10AM-7PM EST. Runners can also pick up their race packet the morning of the race at 7AM on the 28th. Metro Run and Walk can be found at 3522 N. Grape rd.. Mishawaka In. 46545 574-257-7867 www.michianarunning.com.

Potato Creek State Park: Is located in the Eastern time zone. The address is 25601 state road 4, North Liberty Indiana, 46554. The park is 3,840 acres. Camping is available. Last year the park charged us a 2 day minimum for camping. Reservations for camping can be made via telephone 1-866-622-6746 or made online at www.CAMP.IN.gov . Calls can be made from noon til 4PM M-F. Noon til 3PM Sat-Sun. Reservations made online can be made 24/7 365 days a year.

Race Day Instructions: The race will begin promptly at 8 AM EST. The start/finish area is the Orchard Shores East picnic area. In the event of overflow parking, please use the large parking lot located a few hundred meters up the hill at the Nature Center. There should be ample parking in these two lots. Please do not Park on the grass this year. We will have a mandatory meeting at 7:45AM to go over the course and address any concerns you may have. Bathrooms are located at the Orchard Shores picnic area (vault toilets) and flush toilets and running water are just up the hill at the Nature Center.

Drop downs in events will be allowed this year. If at anytime you need to drop down to the next event you may do so; but, you must announce your intentions to the nearest A/S captain. Your finisher award will show the corrected distance.

The course has three aid stations. Horseman's a/s is 3.67 miles from the start. The Nature Center a/s is located 2.18 miles away with 5.85 total miles. The next a/s is Peppermint road. It is the driveway to the property managers house. It is 3.17 miles away from the Nature Center and 9.02 miles into the course. The final a/s is back to the Nature Center which is 3.87 miles away and 12.89 total miles. The finish is located .17 miles to the west at Orchard shores.

MARATHON RUNNERS: Please check in at each A/S on your final loop.

ULTRA RUNNERS: We will have a area for drop bags at the Nature Center. This is about the center of the course and easily accessed. Pacers will be allowed for the final loop. Pacers must not carry water or supplies for their runner. During the final loop ultra runners and marathoners must check in at each aid station. The course is closed after 6PM. We will have a/s cut offs for this years ultra event. Runners must leave the Horseman's a/s by 3:45PM, outbound Nature Center by 4:15, Peppermint A/S by 5 PM.

Basically runners must maintain a 15 minute mile when leaving Horseman's a/s at 3:45 PM.

I am not in the business of forcing people to drop and every effort will be made to accommodate the runners.

If you have any questions or concerns please give me a call or email.

See you all at the race!

Deadlines, Emails, and Giveaways

Ok people, the deadline for an engraved finisher medal is this Monday at 5PM EST.  So if you are on the fence about this race just know that after Monday the 23rd we will only take race entries for the 1/2 marathon.  Also, any entries for the half after this date will have a blank medal with out your name on them.  I've gotta draw the line somewhere, and that somewhere is this coming Monday.

Tomorrow after all my kids soccer activities are finished I will be out at the park re-running, and certifying the course.  Making absolutely sure of the distances, and the locations of each aid station.  The course is 98% ( give or take) complete.  Please know that once this is established for 100% I will be sending out a email to all entrants with the course info, park info, and info for packet pick up with exception to D. Schmidlapp from Plymouth Indiana who didn't put his email address on his mail in entry. :-) I guess I will call him.

We will once again offer the "GUESS THE GAP" contest during the race this year.  This is a contest where you the runners have to write out the amount of elapsed time between the first half marathon finisher to the first ultra finisher.  Last year was a close one with 12 seconds separating  the correct guess from the second closest guess.   Last year we gave away a TIMEX IRONMAN Global Trainer and HR monitor. Fully wired, with GPS and all the latest goodies.  Our sponsor Metro Run and Walk was good enough to donate it as well as a bunch of other stuff last year.  Metro Run and Walk is located at 3522N. Grape Rd.  574-257-7867.   If you guys see Dave ( tall handsome older guy) walking around at the race be sure to thank him for his support.

As always if you guys need to reach me for questions, or just want to vent about the upcoming presidential race give me a call on my cell phone, or email me.

Respect,
Senator Brett

Important info

Hello Runners!

I hope your training for this years run has gone smoothly and you are injury free for this years PC Trail Runs. We are hoping for ideal weather conditions, as the field for the race this year will be bigger than last year. The Tech shirts are in as well the finisher medals have been ordered. You will be able to have your name engraved onto the finisher medal as long as you are signed up by April 23rd. After that date you will still get the medal for the correct distance you were able to finish; it will not however, have your name engraved onto it.
DROP DOWNS: if during the course of running the event you feel it necessary to drop down to a shorter distance you may do so. Please announce your intentions at one of the three Aid Stations where the Aid Station captain will make note of it. Your finisher medal will not have your name engraved should you choose to drop down in distance.

Aid Stations: Are located no greater than 3.5 miles apart from each other. This year the A/S will have the mileage clearly marked at each. Also, in the final loop of the marathon, and the Ultra - runners must check in at each A/S. This is an effort to prevent any accidental course wanderings, and allows us to closer track the runners while out on the course.

During the final loop of the ultra distance the runners will be directed to make a cut in the course making the total distance close to 38 miles VS the 40 if they were to run a full three loops.

Garmin based maps will be up showing the cut for the final loop by the weekend.

The gates to the park will be open at 7 AM.  Camping will be available.

Thanks for supporting local trail running events!

If you have questions, or need to speak to me feel free to call me at my cell 596-3860, or you can email me at senatorb9@gmail.com

Shirts are in!

OK so I just got word that the shirts are in!  I'll get a picture up here ASAP!

Exciting stuff going on behind the scenes.  Dave at Metro Run and Walk ( for all your running needs!) has helped the race again this year with getting the shirts ordered and printed.  I'll stop by his store tomorrow and take a quick pic of the shirt and post it up here.   Rest assured whatever the color the shirts are they  WILL match Bill K's tights this year.  :-)

Bag Piper

If any of you guys know the bag piper from Culver please have him contact me.  I dont have his contact info!

The training run is still on for Saturday at noon!  Bring a water bottle and some bug spray!

Group training runs

I am trying to organize a group training run  on March 24, and April 14th.  We will meet at noon at the Nature center and run 1/2 the course at a time.  Expect to be out for around 1 hour and 15 minutes.  If there is a large group we can split up into different pacing groups; making it comfortable for all involved.   The nature centure has bathrooms and a drinking fountain.  Making this an ideal spot to start and end from.
Email me at senatorb9@gmail.com if you have questions.

Race Update 03-05-2012

Good Morning everyone!

I hope you all have had productive training this weekend. The race is now on the horizon and its time to stretch out your mileage. My suggestion is to reach your goal mileage in the next two weeks and then allow for some taper time before the race.

A quick apology to everyone; I am sorry about not returning a few emails this year. After I opened my Gmail account it occurred to me that at the start of the New Year Gmail has stopped forwarding the race emails to me. Not being the most tech savvy person I think it was probably more operator error than anything. I am very sorry to those of you who have not gotten a proper response to your emails. I broke out in a nervous sweat last night when I realized what has happened.

In an effort to make amends may I suggest that if I have not given you a satisfactory answer to your questions please call me on my Cell Phone 574-596-3860 or send me another email to my main account senatorb9@gmail.com .

Face Book: There seems to be some confusion with the FB account. I set it up like the race is a person. That way it can be a continuing account that people can tag photos and constantly update with info. If you are looking for the account think first name-last name like this, “Potatocreek Trailruns” if you were to put this into the search window I think this should pull it up.

Course map: I will be updating the course map by the end of the month. Due to NIMBA redirecting the mountain bike course and adding another .7 of a mile I will have to change the course just a little bit over last year. I just ran the course this past Saturday and it was a bit long with me moving one aid station and the extra .7 on the mountain bike trail.

Misc: I will order the finisher awards this week. I will be going with about what we had last year. If you can sign up a week before the race I should be able to get you a finisher medal with your name engraved on race day. Ultra peeps will again be getting a brass hiking compass with the race logo, distance and date engraved on the back. Those of you signing up the day of the race you will receive a finisher medal; but, it will only have race logo, date and distance.

Again, apologies for any delay in email response. Hopefully I have taken steps to correct this.

Respect,

Senator Brett

A Rambling Post:

The entries for the 2012 race keep trickling in as we near the end of February. Some interesting observations so far:

The 60k field of runners will be much larger than last year.

All of the course winners from last year will be returning to run again in 2012.

I have managed to nail down a suitable “rental” agreement between the race and the owner of the pneumatic potato launcher for the next 45 years (odd but that is what he wanted).

I will keep the new shirt color a secret until they come in.

Northern Indiana Mountain Bike Assoc has done some work to the trails adding about .7 miles to the mountain bike trail section

It has been a pretty mild winter so far making trail running for this time of year much more enjoyable than in years past.

People have been contacting me about the race at all hours of the day and night. No worries. I find it amusing so far.

If you guys can fit it into your schedules I strongly suggest getting out to the park for a training run with Bill K. They meet Saturdays at 8 AM in the parking lot by the Nature Center. I will be heading out there myself sometime this coming weekend to run the course with a Garmin so I can put the data on the blog. Although I will not be able to make 8 AM session (sorry Bill) I will fit it in where I don’t have basketball or indoor soccer obligations with my kids. If you see me out there please stop me and say hello.

Respect,

Senator Brett

Last years runners/times

As a reminder:  Those who took first place last year please fill out a mail in entry, fill it out and then please mail it out to me.  (Rachel Kaser and Brett Pete I am talking directly to you!) I am working with Todd from T&H timing as what he needs to update the "see who is registered" listing for the rest of the mail in entries.

Free food at the finish line.

You get to meet local running legend Bill "Idaho" Kulwicki.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!   Starting Jan 7th our resident ultra guy "Idaho" Bill will be putting on a group run every Saturday on sections of the race course at Potato Creek.  Anyone interested should meet at the Nature center at 8:00 AM.(EST)  Please wear weather appropriate clothing and carry your own water if needed.   I think these are hour long runs ( tho I am sure you could talk Bill into more if need be ) and this is a great way to jump-start your early season training.

Also- please check out our Facebook page.  Its up and running; however, it doesnt have a ton of info loaded onto to it yet.   I am hoping to upload photos, course map and other info in the next few days!

As always, if anyone has questions give me a shout at pctrailinfo@gmail.com

Respect,
Senator
